Welcome to Year 6!

Elephant Class - Miss Barnard
Rhino Class - Mrs Bond & Mr Jones
Year 6 promises to be an exciting and memorable final year of primary school, filled with opportunities to learn, grow and shine. From the adventure of our residential trip to the River Dart, to taking centre stage in the Year 6 production, there is plenty to look forward to.Alongside fascinating topics such as World War II, evolution and polar biomes, there are inspiring trips and experiences that will bring learning to life.
Our aim is to prepare children for a new part of their learning journey: secondary school and beyond!
We hope that by the end of Year 6, children have embedded their SPARKS values and go into the world supporting others, are proud of their achievements and most importantly, treat all those who they meet with kindness and respect.

Year 6 have been busy using their creativity to design their very own superheroes! They have invented exciting powers, created detailed backstories, and thought carefully about their hero’s personality and challenges. This week in English, we are taking their ideas further by writing a biography about their superhero, exploring their early life, how they gained their powers, and the choices they make to use them for good. Have a look at some of the photos of our superheroes in action!
9th March 2026
Year 6 have been exploring the exciting novel Podkin One-Ear and using it as inspiration for their own creative work. We began by designing and drawing our own warrior rabbits, thinking carefully about their unique features and battle-ready characteristics. In English lessons, we then used these ideas to write a non-chronological report about our very own warrior rabbit clan. The reports included information about how our rabbits differ from ordinary rabbits, who leads the clan, and why they are such dangerous and powerful warriors. It has been wonderful to see the pupils’ creativity and descriptive writing skills come to life through this imaginative project!

Year 6 had a fantastic time at their inter-class sports tournament this week! The competition saw the Rhinos and the Elephants go head-to-head in an exciting series of football, basketball and tennis matches. Every game was filled with energy, teamwork and brilliant sportsmanship, as pupils cheered each other on and gave their very best effort. From impressive goals on the football pitch, to skilful shots on the basketball court and determined rallies on the tennis courts, it was wonderful to see everyone getting involved and supporting their teammates.
2nd February 2026
It has been another productive and exciting couple of weeks for Year 6. The children worked incredibly hard on their practice SATs assessments last week, showing impressive levels of progress that we are all extremely proud of. Their focus, resilience and positive attitudes shone through, and they should feel very pleased with what they have achieved so far this year.
As part of our continued learning about the Second World War, we also enjoyed a fantastic trip to Bletchley Park. Hopefully, when you asked what they got up to, they replied with “boring office work!”—just as the real wartime workers were told to say after signing the Official Secrets Act! The children loved exploring the site, touring the recreated work huts and discovering more about the incredible people who worked there in absolute secrecy. A highlight was the brilliant workshop where they tried out their own code‑breaking skills and even had the chance to use a real WW2 Enigma machine.
Next week, we are very much looking forward to visiting The Misbourne to watch their production of High School Musical. It promises to be a lively and enjoyable morning!
19th January 2026
Year 6 have settled back into school brilliantly after the Christmas break and have been working extremely hard across all subjects. In maths, pupils have mastered all aspects of percentages and decimals, showing great confidence and accuracy. In English, we finished the week by publishing some excellent suspense stories which truly kept us on the edge of our seats.
We are now fully immersed in our World War II topic and are very much looking forward to our WW2 Day on Thursday. The children have been learning about what life was like for evacuees and have begun writing letters in role as WW2 evacuees, demonstrating empathy and excellent historical understanding. In ICT, we have started learning about Bletchley Park in preparation for our upcoming trip at the start of February, which has generated lots of excitement.
A quick plea to parents and carers: please could you check that your child has the correct equipment in their pencil case. A number of pupils are currently without handwriting pens and purple editing pens. These are available at great prices from the stationery shop on Thursdays. Thank you for your continued support.
6th January 2026
Welcome back to Spring Term! We hope you all had a lovely break and are looking forward to what promises to be a busy and exciting term ahead. We are pleased to welcome Miss Barnard to the Year 6 team, and 6 Elephants have quickly settled back into class as Mrs Gavin begins her maternity leave.
In English, we will be starting the term with narrative writing, focusing on developing our skills to create stories full of suspense and tension. In Maths, our learning will centre around decimals and percentages, building on prior knowledge and applying these skills to problem-solving.
In Humanities, we are beginning our new topic on World War II. This will be brought to life with an exciting WWII Experience Day on 22/01, which we are all very much looking forward to. Later in the term, we will also be visiting Bletchley Park, an excellent opportunity to deepen our understanding of this important period in history.
Please note: PE for both Year 6 classes will now take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Children should come to school in their PE kits on these days.
It’s set to be a fantastic term of learning in Year 6!
15th December 2025
It has been a busy couple of weeks for Year 6! Last week, we finished writing our own versions of the Hansel and Gretel fairytale: some of us chose grizzly endings for the witch whilst others chose to finish our tales on a cliff hanger, would Hansel and Gretel ever escape the witch's evil clutches?
Our yearly visit to the Elgiva pantomime in Chesham was a roaring success (oh yes it was!) and our brave year 6 Jackson won the onstage competition against another school.
In Maths, all groups have finished their unit on Fractions and begun a new unit on measurement and converting between different units of mass, capacity and length. After Christmas, we will continue this and then start a percentages and decimals unit or ratio and algebra.
Today, our Year 5/6 assembly went brilliantly and we are all in a very festive mood for the last few days of term. The children performed their poems perfectly and our year group song, "The Greatest Snow!" was utterly fantastic! Thank you, children, for all your hard work and Merry Christmas everyone!
1st December 2025
Year 6 have had a wonderfully productive and exciting few weeks.
In English, the children have been working hard on enhancing their descriptive writing and using dialogue effectively to bring their stories to life. They are now applying these skills to retell the traditional tale Hansel and Gretel, and we’ve already seen some truly mouth-watering descriptions of gingerbread houses that would tempt anyone into the forest!
The class also enjoyed a fantastic day of sport, where they had the opportunity to try a range of new activities—from boxing and archery to boccia. The enthusiasm and teamwork on display were brilliant.
As we move closer to the festive season, all children now have parts or poems to learn in preparation for our Christmas assemblies. We are all very excited for these performances and can’t wait to share them with you. There is also a real buzz around the whole-school trip to the pantomime, which promises to be a highlight of the term.
In Maths, we are finishing our work on fractions before moving on to measurement for the final weeks of the term.
Well done, Year 6—keep up the great effort!
17th November 2025
In Year 6, all Maths groups have continued their Fractions unit, focusing on adding and subtracting mixed and improper fractions. This week, the children have worked incredibly hard and done another set of practice SATS assessments.
In English, we are coming towards the end of our unit on debates. The children have written some very detailed and persuasive debates arguing 'Should animals be kept in zoos?'. Towards the end of the week, we hope to publish these and put them up on display.
Everyone in Year 6 has been given the opportunity to come along and help run some games at the Christmas Fair on Sunday 7th December at the infant school for half an hour. There will be a letter coming out soon with further details and timings. Do let us know if your child (or you) is interested in coming to help!
3rd November 2025
In Year 6, all Maths groups have now started Fractions. We have begun by identifying equivalent fractions e.g. 2/4 = ½ , and looking at how to simplifying them e.g. 6/12 can be simplified to ½ as both 6 and 12 are multiplies of 6. We will be looking at how to compare and order fractions dependent on the numerator (top number) and denominator (bottom number). Did you know that the line in a fraction is called a vinculum? Take a look at this fraction game https://www.sheppardsoftware.com/math/fractions/equivalent-mathman-review/
In English, we have started to focus on debates and held a very heated debate proposing "Homework should be banned." Both sides generated some very compelling arguments and debated in a respectful and concise manner. We have also generated sentence starters to use in written pieces of writing: those that would join arguments together e.g. additionally, furthermore; those that oppose a point of view e.g. however, on the other hand; and those that indicate cause and effect e.g. As a result, consequently. In the event of a school closure, remote learning will be available here.
