15th December 2025

This week, Year 4 have been very busy in the run up to Christmas. We performed a fabulous show to parents on Wednesday afternoon which included poems and songs. The children were very excited to perform and did a great job on the stage.

We have finished up our topic in Maths on Multiplication and Division and have been learning lots of new times tables. We recommend that the children continue to practise these by using Times Table Rockstars over the Christmas Holidays.

In English we have worked hard and have been writing 'A Tale of Fear' using our literary tools (metaphors, similes and personification) to help us create a great piece of setting description. In Guided Reading we finished our story 'Oliver and the Seawigs' which the children thoroughly enjoyed.

In History, we finished our topic on Anglo-Saxons. This week, the children debated with one another as to what was the main reason that Alfred the Great was great. They learnt about his successes in life and why we have named him 'great'.

Finally, in Science, the children have concluded their topic on Electricity. We finished up with the importance of electrical safety and how to keep safe when plugging devices or appliances at home and also where it is appropriate to use them.

1st December 2025

In year 4 the children have had lots of fun learning about electricity. In Science, we continued our investigations by making circuits and adding different items to the circuits to see if they conduct electricity. We tried things like plastic spoons, tin foil, pencils and paper in the circuits to find whether the objects were conductors or insulators.

We also applied our electricity learning in our DT project, which was all about designing a torch with a real circuit. Using just a bottle, wires, batteries and light bulbs, we managed to make functional torches that we could switch on and off! After that we evaluated them for effectiveness. The children really enjoyed the project.

17th November 2025

We have had a fun week of learning in Year 4 this week! In Maths we have been learning about our 3, 6 and 9 times table. On Thursday we took our Maths lesson outside to explore the relationship between these times tables. We braved the cold weather to draw number lines with chalk to show where the multiples were and which numbers were multiples of 3, 6 and 9. Once we were back in class we put the multiples into Venn diagrams and discussed our findings.

In English, we have been working on some more of our tools (direct speech, show don't tell and reported thoughts and feelings) for our toolkit to help us plan and write a recount. On Wednesday, we did "hot seating" and discussed as a class and then groups about a shared event to help us write some direct speech and reported thoughts and feelings. On Friday, in English we have been starting to find the features and some examples of Tanka poems.

In Science, we continued our electricity topic and performed 8 electrical circuit tests. Using wires, lightbulbs and batteries, we first made a prediction on whether the circuit would work and then built the circuit to test our prediction.

In History, we investigated Anglo-Saxon place names and how they were named by the lay of the land and who had settled there. We discovered that some of our local place names for example Prestwood means "Priest wood".

3rd November 2025

  • This fortnight, we have been working on addition and subtraction using the column method. We are now moving on to look at area and the children have been using their multiplication skills to help them with this.  Can you measure the area of any shapes you can find at home?

  • In English we have been looking at recounts and focusing on using past tense verbs.  You could find some recounts in newspapers or online to support your child.
