1st May 2026

Year 2 have been building their skills in description and dialogue through the story Where the Wild Things Are. They have explored key features of the text, including the use of speech marks, understanding characters’ feelings, and choosing more exciting alternatives to “said.”

In Maths, the children have been developing their understanding of fractions, focusing on finding one third, identifying whole amounts, and recognising unit fractions.

In Science, the class has been learning about plant growth and the conditions seeds need to thrive. The children particularly enjoyed planting their own sweet pea seeds and observing and recording how they grow.

13th April 2026

In Maths, we have started a brand-new unit on fractions. The children have been learning about the concept of parts and whole, helping them understand how objects can be divided. We have also explored equal and unequal parts, and the class has begun to recognise a half in different shapes and quantities. The children have enjoyed using practical resources and visuals to support their understanding.

In English, we have begun a creative unit based on the story Where the Wild Things Are. The focus has been on dialogue and descriptive writing. The children used their imaginations to draw pictures of where they think the story is set. They then wrote sentences describing their ideas, thinking carefully about setting and atmosphere. Some fantastic descriptions included dense jungles, towering trees, waterfalls, and mysterious animals.

To develop their speaking and listening skills, the children have also been working with partners to retell the story aloud. They used iPads to record and replay their storytelling which helped them build confidence in their expression and reflect on their work.

9th March 2026

In English this week, Year 2 have been exploring the story The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch. We have been describing the characters by using more than one adjective to make our writing more detailed. The children also practised using similes to create clear and imaginative descriptions, as well as alliteration to make their sentences more fun and engaging to read. It has been wonderful to see the class becoming more creative and confident in their writing as they bring the characters from the story to life.

In Maths this week, Year 2 have continued learning about money. The children have been practising how to calculate with money, make a pound using different coins and find change. They have been using their counting and problem-solving skills to work out different amounts and explore real-life money situations.

23rd February 2026

This week we have started our new maths unit on money. The children have been learning to identify different coins, make amounts, and find different combinations of coins that equal the same value.

In English, we began our new topic on characterisation based on the story The Lighthouse Keeper’s Lunch. On Tuesday, after break, Mrs Dibble discovered a half-eaten lunch on the playground. The children had lots of fun discussing who it could belong to, how it got there, and why it had been eaten, and decided it must belong to a pirate!

The children have also been very excited to start Forest School this week and enjoyed learning about maps through creative art activities.

2nd February 2026

This week in Year 2, the children have been busy learning across the curriculum. In maths, they have been reciting the 5 times table, practising dividing by 5, and using both the 5 and 10 times tables to solve problems.

In English, the children have been innovating a firefighter report text by changing it into a police officer report, and by the end of the week they will use these skills to create their own report based on doctors.

In science, the children have continued their learning about materials, recognising that the strength of some materials can be changed.

19th January 2026

In Year 2, we have been very busy learning lots of new skills! In maths, we have been learning how to add equal groups, make equal groups by sharing, recite the two times table, and divide by 2. In English, we have been looking at how to use subheadings to organise our writing, how to start a piece of writing with a rhetorical question, and how to leave a lasting impression on the reader by including a wow fact. In art, we are continuing our sculpture unit and this week we learnt how to use impressing and joining techniques to decorate our own dough tiles.

6th January 2026

Year 2 have returned from the Christmas holidays with lots of enthusiasm and are already working hard. In Maths, we have begun our new topic on multiplication and division by learning how to recognise equal groups and make equal groups, using practical activities to support our understanding. In English this half term, we will be creating a non-fiction report based on the role of a firefighter, exploring what firefighters do, where they work and the equipment they use. We are also very pleased to welcome two new pupils to Red Kite Class, Charlotte and Archie, who have settled in really well.

1st December 2025

Our class has had an exciting few weeks filled with creativity and problem-solving. The children have been busy crafting their own independent pirate stories, using a picture prompt to spark their imaginations. They thought carefully about their senses—describing what their characters might hear, taste, and feel—and worked hard to include all the ideas we have explored together in literacy.

In maths, the children have been developing their shape skills, learning to draw a range of 2-D shapes, identify and create lines of symmetry, and use these lines to complete symmetrical shapes.

17th November 2025

In English, we have been looking at the text The Legend of Blackbeard’s Stone, an exciting mythical story about a pirate who protects his special stone from sea creatures. The children are now planning their own versions of the story, using interesting adjectives, different weather, times of day, and proper nouns to make their settings come alive.

In Maths, we are beginning to explore 2D and 3D shapes and learning all about their different properties. The children have enjoyed identifying, sorting and describing a variety of shapes.

3rd November 2025

Before our half term break and since returning to school Year 2 have been focusing on the consonant sounds k, s, w, q, and z in Phonics. The children have been exploring the different graphemes that represent these sounds. They have been practising reading and spelling words using these sounds and graphemes, building their confidence in recognising patterns and applying their phonics knowledge in their writing and reading.

In English, we have started a new unit all about settings. The children have been learning how to create vivid and exciting descriptions by using their senses to imagine what a place might look, sound, feel, and smell like. Over the next few weeks we will be focusing on selecting interesting adjectives, using similes with like or as, and including proper nouns. We will also be working on important punctuation skills, such as using apostrophes for contraction and possession, commas in a list, and fronted adverbials to start their sentences in engaging ways.

We have been developing our number knowledge and addition skills learning about number bonds, including bonds to 10 and 100, fact families within 20, and related facts. We have practised adding and subtracting 1s, adding by making 10, and adding three 1-digit numbers. This week we have been focusing on subtraction—learning to subtract from 10, subtract a 1-digit number from a 2-digit number, and subtracting across 10. The children have been working hard to build their confidence and fluency with these important number facts.

In the event of a school closure, remote learning will be available here.
