Year 3
Welcome to Year 3!

Penguin Class - Mrs Reid Jones
Year 3 promises to be a fun and inspiring year, full of opportunities to discover, explore and shine. From stepping back in time to the Stone Age and unravelling the mysteries of Ancient Egypt, to learning about dramatic volcanoes and the might of the Romans, there will be plenty to capture our curiosity. A highlight of the year will be our trip to the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, where we will bring our Egyptian learning to life. Alongside these fascinating topics, children will also enjoy the exciting opportunity to begin learning the violin and to develop their singing through regular practice.
With so many rich experiences to look forward to, Year 3 is sure to be a memorable and rewarding adventure.

2nd March 2026
We’ve had a wonderful week in Year Three, filled with creativity, curiosity, and plenty of hands‑on learning. Here’s a little look at what we’ve been up to and what’s coming next.
English – Inventing Our Own Characters
In English, the children have been busy inventing and describing their own characters. We have been focusing on using adventurous vocabulary, powerful adjectives, and detailed features to bring these creations to life. The imagination and originality on display have been fantastic—well done, Year Three!
Maths – Length and Measure
This week in Maths, we have been exploring length and measure. The children have been comparing, estimating, and measuring using centimetres and metres, as well as practising accurate use of rulers and metre sticks. You can support their learning at home by encouraging them to estimate and measure everyday objects.
Science – Light and Shadow
We have just started our exciting new Science topic: Light and Shadow. The children have begun investigating light sources and thinking about how shadows are formed. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be carrying out practical investigations to help us understand how light travels and how shadows change.
Upcoming Trip – Ashmolean Museum (Thursday)
We are very much looking forward to our trip to the Ashmolean Museum on Thursday. This will be a fantastic opportunity for the children to explore real historical artefacts and deepen their understanding of our curriculum topics.
Please ensure your child arrives on time, dressed in school uniform, with a packed lunch and a water bottle.

In English, we have started our new focus on Character Description. The children are learning how to use descriptive language to bring their characters to life.
Supplies
Please can we ask you to make sure that the children are coming into school with all the equipment they need for the week. We spend a lot of time trying to find whiteboard pens and glue sticks for those who have run out. They are reminded to bring their pencil cases home on a Friday so they can be replenished. Thank you for your help with this.
26th January 2026
We’ve had a wonderfully busy and engaging week in Year Three, filled with hands‑on learning and lots of curiosity.
Maths
This week, the children have been learning about division with remainders. They practised sharing numbers into equal groups and explored what happens when there is something left over. The class showed fantastic resilience as they worked through trickier problems.
Science
In our science lessons, we investigated magnets and how they work. The children explored which materials are magnetic and enjoyed experimenting with the idea of attraction and repulsion. It was lovely to see so many thoughtful predictions and eager discussions.
Topic / English
Our exploration of Ernest Shackleton’s expedition to Antarctica continued. The children were fascinated by the challenges faced by the explorers and enjoyed learning more about what life was like in such extreme conditions.
French
In French, we built on our vocabulary by asking for shapes using colour and size. The children then used the shapes they requested to create their own pictures, giving them a fun and practical way to apply their language skills.
12th January 2026
Year 3 has had a great start to the new term. We are using "The day the crayons quit" as a stimulus in our English lessons. Maths, we are continuing multiplication and division. We are also learning some French this term! So far, we have covered colours and shapes!
Please can we ask you to make sure that your child's earrings are removed or covered in tape for our PE day.
10th November 2025
Year 3's English focus has been on diary recounts. We used various books to help build a bank of knowledge, before writing their own version. In math we have been adding and subtracting two- and three-digit numbers. We are now using the column method, and they are beginning to understand when to carry and make an exchange!
In the event of a school closure, remote learning will be available here.
